Dalton High Recognized As AP Honors School For 3rd Consecutive Year

  • Thursday, February 19, 2015

For the third year, Dalton High School has been named to the list of 609 AP (Advanced Placement) Honors Schools in Georgia for 2015. Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods released the list of Georgia schools receiving honors in his review of The College Board’s AP Report to the Nation. DHS was recognized in two areas: AP STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) School and AP Access and Support School.

“It’s an honor to have made the list for the third year,” said DHS Principal Steve Bartoo. “This recognition certainly affirms the hard work our teachers and students do on a daily basis. Although there is always opportunity for growth, we are very proud of our AP program and the accomplishments of our students and teachers.”

DHS offers 14 AP classes to students, ranging from biology to music theory. More students enrolled in AP courses and took the exams in comparison to last year.

“Each student is encouraged to take a rigorous workload,” said Mr. Bartoo. “In the last five years, we’ve seen a steady increase of students taking advantage of AP resources.”

“Once again, I want to congratulate the staff and students at Dalton High School for receiving the AP Honor School recognition for the third year in a row,” said Dr. Jim Hawkins, superintendent of Dalton Public Schools. “Through programs, such as the AP program, students have the opportunity to experience college-level academics, earn college credits and enter this phase of their education more confident and prepared.”

DHS was recognized in the following two categories:

AP STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Schools

Schools with students in at least two AP math courses and two science courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science)

AP Access and Support Schools

Schools with at least 30 percent of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African-American and/or Hispanic and 30 percent of all AP exams earning scores of three or higher.
