Misconceptions About Ban The Box

  • Sunday, November 29, 2015

Mr. Exum,

I want to invite you as a guest speaker at the NAACP General Membership meeting.  I believe we can accomplish our goals and clear up any misconceptions about Ban The Box and the role of the NAACP in a much more meaningful manner face to face.

In that vein I would like to invite you to have coffee with me at Panera Bread.  I will not make a spectacle out of myself nor you by debating this issue through the media.  However, let us clear the records for your readers:

1.  "Ban the Box" does not mean "Ban Background Checks."  Employers are encouraged to do background checks. Keeping the box on the application almost guarantees that ex-offenders applications will be thrown out before they have a chance for an interview. I am an employer, and I always do a background check because people are not always forthcoming.

2.  It is not the role of the NAACP to stop the shootings nor take the role of law enforcement. However, we do support the efforts of law enforcement and we also protect and defend the rights of those who are violated by those in law enforcement

Lastly, the NAACP is proud to stand united with millions of families and other civil rights organizations across this country to give ex-offenders that have paid their debts to society a second chance. We believe a man that works will be a better citizen provide for his family, and will lessen the likelihood of being a repeat offender.

A sincere thank you is extended to Councilman Hakeem and Councilman Chris Anderson for sponsoring and co-sponsoring the resolution as well as the City Council for their support. It is the right thing to do.

For those who will benefit directly from this resolution join the NAACP on Tuesday at the City Council Building on Lindsey Street, next to the mayor's office, at 6 p.m. so that you will be accounted for.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. It's half a million adults and youth members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their community, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors. The Southeast Region consists of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
