World War II Veteran Retired From Norfolk Southern Railroad After 40 Years

Kenton Thomas Hixson, 89, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, died on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Parkridge East Hospital after a brief illness.

Kenton was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Chattanooga to Creed Bates and Janie (Hames) Hixson. He graduated from Central High School in 1944. Kenton served in the United State Navy during World War II aboard the USS Vicksburg seeing action in the South Pacific, including the Battle of Iwo Jima. He married the former Vivian Marie Robinson here in Chattanooga on March 8, 1947. They celebrated their 36th anniversary before Vivian was called home to be with the Lord.

Kenton worked for the Norfolk Southern Railroad for over 40 years. As a member of Highland Park Baptist Church, Kenton faithfully served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, bus captain, choir member, trustee of Tennessee Temple Schools and Sunday School Superintendent, a post he held for 16 years.

He was admired for his devotion to his family and tender care for his wife and mother during extended years of illness. His generous smile, loving embrace, hardy laugh, gregarious personality and friendly demeanor was welcomed by all. Most of all, Kenton loved the Lord Jesus and served him all of his days. He will be remembered as a godly man of sterling character and humble devotion to Christ and His church.

Kenton was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian (Robinson), his four-year-old daughter, Sandra, his father and mother, Creed and Janie Hixson.

Kenton is survived by his three children, Marilyn (Jim) Jorgensen of Lexington, KY, Kathy (Eddie) Pickel of Trenton, GA, and David (Faith) Hixson of Sandusky, OH; eight grandchildren, Sandra Jorgensen Santaguida, Paul Jorgensen, David Jorgensen, Stephanie Pickel, Kaitlen Pickel, Charissa Hixson Karr, Benjamin Hixson, Aaron Hixson; 11 great-grandchildren, Scott, Kim, Cody, Mark, Alana, Bailey, Kenton, Nolan, Corban, Josiah and one on the way; one brother, Jim (Lou) Hixson of Bath, MI, and two nephews, Michael and Tim Hixson, and long time friend, Faye Mullins and family.

Services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. The funeral service will be officiated by his son, David Hixson, son-in-law, Jim Jorgenson, and Bill Summers. Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.
