Brownderville To Kick Off Writer’s Fest

Author Greg Brownderville will kick off Lee University’s Writer’s Festival with a reading on Monday at 7 p.m. The reading will take place in the Jones Lecture Hall, located in the School of Religion. 

In 2011 Mr. Brownderville published his first collection of poems, “Gust,” which made the Poetry Foundation’s Best-Seller List and was included among “Top Picks” by the Library Journal. In 2012 Mr. Brownderville published “Deep Down in the Delta,” a collection of folkloristic poems based on fieldwork he conducted in and around his home community of Pumpkin Bend, Arkansas. His third book, a collection of poems titled “A Horse with Holes in It,” will be released in 2016. 

Mr. Brownderville has been awarded prizes and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the Missouri Review, Prairie Schooner, New Millennium Writings, and the Porter Fund. An associate professor in Southern Methodist University’s English Department, he teaches creative writing, primarily poetry. He has also taught poetry workshops at Ole Miss, Hendrix College, and Lincoln University. 

“We are thrilled to have Greg Brownderville come to our campus, given his Southern background that so many of our students can identify with,” said Dr. Kevin Brown, professor of English at Lee. “He connects with his Appalachian heritage and helps young writers from our area see themselves in him.” 

Future Writer’s Festival events include authors Denise Giardina and Scott Russell Sanders in addition to Lee’s Stacey Isom Campbell, Dr. Will Woolfitt, and Dr. Brown.
