David LeBron McWhorter, 59, died suddenly at a local hospital on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

David was baptized at the age of four at St. Francis Catholic Church. He attended St. Francis Catholic School and later on Orchard Knob Junior High. He was a graduate of Riverside High School Class of ’74 and he attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta. David was an employee at Wheland Foundry prior to joining the United State Air Force. While in the United States Air Force he was stationed in Germany. Following his service in the Air Force, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Chattanooga.  He was a member of the Basilica at Saints Peter and Paul.

David was well known by many as well as loved by relatives and friends. He had a kind heart and was willing to lend a hand whenever needed. He was a loving caregiver for his mother and he was the uncle his nieces and nephews loved to be around during family gatherings. David had a beautiful smile and sometimes a sharp, dry sense of humor. He had a laugh that could be infectious and make you laugh even when you didn’t want to. He will be missed by all who loved him, but it is understood and faithfully believed he is in God’s care now.

David was preceded in death by his father, John H. McWhorter, Jr.; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. McWhorter, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Joise Paul and George Walker.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa M. Hinton, Hamilton, New Jersey; mother, Marian McWhorter, Chattanooga; brother, John H. McWhorter, III, Chattanooga; sisters, Bertha (Jimmy) Church, Nashville; Sandra Brinson, Jacksonville, FL; Carol (Robert, Sr.) Thomas, Chattanooga; niece, Monica (Emeri) Gordon, Chattanooga; nephews, Jimi S. Church, Nashville; Robert P. II (Sheniqua) and Jason Thomas, Sr., both of Chattanooga; Chief Warrant Officer, John H. (LaToyah) McWhorter, IV, Fort Bragg, NC; Willie, Derrick (Regina), and Jason (Angela) Brinson, all of Jacksonville, FL; very special great niece, Alanna Gordon; great-nephews, DeLane and Chaison Gordon and Jason Thomas, Jr., all of Chattanooga; other relatives and friends; special family friend, Patricia Sanderfer, Chattanooga.

A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 214 East Eighth Street. Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Wednesday, and the family will receive friends from 6–7 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
