Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment In Catoosa County

  • Tuesday, October 13, 2015

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (C.A.L.E.A) will arrive Nov. 2, to examine all aspects of the Catoosa County Sheriff’s office policy and procedures, management, operations and support services, Sheriff Gary R. Sisk announced.

Verification by the team that Catoosa County Sheriff’s office meets the commission’s state of the art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation, a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, he said. As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. The session will be conducted in the Catoosa County Commissioners Board meeting room at 800 Lafayette Street, Ringgold.

If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, they may do so by telephone. The public may call 706 965-7138 between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 3.

Telephone comments as well as appearances are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the C.A.L.E.A. Standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office. Contact John Wengert, accreditation manager at 706 925-2424.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Catoosa County Sheriff’s office ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc., 13575 Heathcote, Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155.

The Catoosa County Sheriff’s office has to comply with 187 nationally recognized standards in order to continue their accreditation status says Sheriff Sisk. The sheriff’s office was first accredited on March 23, 2013 and this assessment is to maintain that accreditation. The Catoosa County Sheriff’s office is one of seven sheriff’s offices in Georgia to receive C.A.L.E.A. accreditation.

The C.A.L.E.A. accreditation manager for Catoosa County Sheriff’s office is Deputy John Wengert. He said the assessment team is comprised of public safety practitioners from similar, but out of state agencies. The assessors will review written material, interview individuals and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be observed.

The assessors are: Chief Jean Duguay of the Broward County Sheriff’s office of Florida and Captain David Finck of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s office of New Jersey.

Once the C.A.L.E.A. assessors complete their review of the agency, they will report to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency’s accreditation status is to be renewed.

Accreditation is for four years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
