Martin L. Garrett, 88, died on Saturday, October 10, 2015. 

He was a graduate of Howard High School and retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of service. He held the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG-E8). After retirement from the army, he continued to work for the federal government until he retired.

He was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Red Rose Club 1 and Family Ministry 10. He was devoted to his family and friends. Uncle Martin was a friend to many.  His even temper and his demeanor drew many to him. These attributes made him a person one wants to know. He will be greatly missed and well thought of by those who knew him best.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Garrett and Rosa Patton Garrett; sisters, GladysGarrett, Ruth Garrett, Louise Garrett, Fannie Talley, Alma Talley and brother, Peter Garrett.

He is survived by his nieces, Dorothy Garrett, Vivian Thompson, Louise Thompson, Andree Wright and Edna Talley; foster sisters, Carrie Mae Ashmore, Barbara Lindsey Roberts, and other relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at noon at Second Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Ernest L. Reid, Jr. officiating and eulogist, Reverend Paul A. McDaniel. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
