Marvin Coffman
Marvin Coffman

Marvin Coffman, 78, of Soddy Daisy, died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 surrounded by his family.

He was a loving husband, father, papaw, brother and friend who will be dearly missed. Marvin was born on September 1, 1936, one of nine children of Lewis and Irene Coffman. He was a graduate of Soddy Daisy High School where he was a standout football and basketball player and a member of the state championship teams coached by Ernest “Big Boy” Eldridge. Following graduation, Marvin moved to Detroit, where he met and married Doris Aldridge Coffman on December 20, 1957.

Together they raised four children and were active members of the Soddy Daisy Community. He particularly enjoyed his many years as a basketball and baseball coach of Daisy Elementary teams. He was instrumental in establishing sports programs for the children of Soddy Daisy. He epitomized “I am my brother’s keeper” and quietly helped many people in need. Marvin retired as a supervisor from DuPont after 23 years of service.

He was a “character” with a quick wit and a true southern gentleman in the proverbial gift of gab. He never met a stranger and was quick with a kind word, sage advice and hilarious stories. His humor was infectious. Marvin was a lifelong democrat who loved a good political debate among friends. He was also an avid golfer who will be missed by his golfing buddies and Moccasin Bend. Marvin was a life-long learner and a man of infinite curiosity. He loved to travel and explore, visiting most of the U.S. states and many countries. His favorite times were with his large, close-knit family making good memories, spinning tall tales and sharing good times together. He filled our lives with love and laughter.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses, Corbett Coffman (Dorothy), Jimmy Coffman (Catherine), Pansy Judd (Harold “H.A.”) and Dena Ridenour.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Doris Coffman; children, Lee Coffman of Soddy Daisy, Cindy Mulkey (Greg) of Raleigh, NC, Deborah Moazen of Alpharetta, GA and Sherry Hicks (Dale) of Acworth, GA; six grandchildren, Brian Moazen (Marisa) of Knoxville, TN, Sarah Mulkey of Raleigh, NC, Christopher Penn of Louisville, KY, Gregory Mulkey of Cincinatti, OH, Corey Hicks and Alex Hicks both of Acworth, GA; two great-grandchildren Abby and Joey Moazen of Knoxville, TN; four brothers, Jay Coffman (Joy), Tommy Coffman (Pat), Joe Coffman (Lisa) all of Soddy Daisy and Donny Coffman (Brenda) of Hixson and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He is also survived by his close friend, J.C. Dugan of Ooltewah.

Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Kenneth Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Poe Cemetery.

Visitation is on Friday. Jan. 30, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
