Lady Scots Basketball Suffers Loss At Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Piedmont used a 24-0 scoring run in the first half and cruised to an 81-60 win over the Covenant women's basketball team on Wednesday night inside Cave Arena.

Aleigha Williams and Morgan Woodward each had 16 points for Covenant (2-16, 2-9 USA South). Woodward added five rebounds and four assists, while Williams also collected five rebounds in the defeat, Covenant's second straight.

Piedmont (15-2, 8-1 USA South) had four players reach double figures in points led by Julianne Bayer and Dakota Sullens with 17 apiece.
Mary Kate Rushton and Taylor Swoszowski added 11 points each.

Covenant scored on its first two possessions of the game as Rachel Price converted a layup, assisted by Woodward, and Haley Soles buried a 3-pointer giving the Scots a 5-2 lead. But Covenant would suffer a seven minute scoring drought later in the half and Piedmont took advantage scoring 24 unanswered points to go ahead 38-12 late in the first half.

The host Lions took a 41-23 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Liz Dougherty chipped in nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a reserve role for Covenant. Abbey Bailey grabbed a team-best seven rebounds and Clara Dirkse picked up six boards. Covenant shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field.

Piedmont was limited to just 37.2 percent (29-of-78) shooting but held a 52-46 rebound edge and tallied 22 second-chance points.

Covenant will be back in action at Barnes PE Center on Saturday against USA South member Huntingdon. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m., or 25 minutes after the men's contest concludes.
