Here are a few of the best, for every season.
SPRING into the Dead Lakes: “The Dead Lakes get their name from the Cypress and Tupelo trees that stand in the water,” says Matt Godwin, owner of Off The Map Expeditions. “…if you go out early in the morning in April, the birds are all coming into nest and other critters are just showing up. The fog comes off the water. It’s very still. You are in the wilderness.”
Soak up the SUMMER sun on a different beach every day: Scallop in the Bay. Shell on the Cape. Go fishing out at Indian Pass. Ms. Jeri, beach adventurer and owner of Gulf Coast Vacation Rentals, recommends Lady J Charters for the Gulf and Southern Tide Charters for the Bay. Jeri’s mantra: “You never know what the next day’s adventure may bring.”
FALL in love with sunset horseback riding on the beach: “I took my seven-year-old and he had the best time. He still talks about it six months later,” says David Ashbrook, manager of the MainStay Suites. GCFL’s sunsets are already breathtaking, but something happens in the fall that is hard to put into words: every hue of red, orange, yellow and purple you can imagine paint the sky. David recommends taking your sunset ride out on the Cape with local guides Broke-A-Toe.
Thaw out this WINTER at “The Point” or “Stump Hole:” A Florida “winter” is something to experience. Everything is crisp, cool and still gorgeous shades of blue and green. David Warriner, president of Tapper and Company Properties Management, Inc. recommends renting a pontoon boat and watching the sunset from “The Point,” the northernmost tip of St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Another favorite? Renting a bike, riding to “Stump Hole,” climbing the rocks and watching the waves.
