Retired From Hamilton County Sheriff's Department After 25 Years

Lt. Johnny Morris (retired) died on Wednesday, January 21, 2015.

He was born to W P (Curly) and Tommie Lowe Morris on September 25, 1932. He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Methodist faith. He was a charter member of the Chattanooga Water Ski Club and the Roadmasters Hot Rod Club. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a veteran of the Korean Police Action serving with Headquarters Company of the 25th Infantry. He also worked in the public information office as a reporter and cartoonist. He designed and directed production of 21,000 Christmas cards for the division. Johnny was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Sea Scout.

After many years in the auto parts field, he began his second career in law enforcement with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department attaining the rank of patrol lieutenant. He retired after 25 years of service and was named officer of the year by the Exchange Club in 1976.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Bettye Jo Stewart Morris, and brother, Tommy Morris.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hammontree Edwards Morris; 3 step sons, Sam, Mike, and Jeff Edwards; step daughter, Carol Beth Edwards; 3 grandchildren; 3 nieces, Denise Durham, Cindy Houser, and Kim McPherson; special cousin, Jane Dixon, and many other cousins.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Jan. 26, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27,  at 11:30 a.m. in the Highway 58 chapel of Turner Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors. Law enforcement officers of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and Dr Don Smith will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
