Driving And Walking Tour Of The Lookout Mountain Battlefield Offered Feb. 7

  • Friday, January 23, 2015

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special two-hour driving/walking tour of the Lookout Mountain Battlefield on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.

Participants will meet a park ranger at the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center parking lot then drive to several points on the battlefield. Visitors will walk a half mile during the course of the program.

Officials said, "A good understanding of the ground often determines who will win and who will lose in a battle, and it also plays a big role in being able to understand the events and stories that occurred on a battlefield many years later.

This program will explore a part of the Lookout Mountain Battlefield that is not often seen – the terrain that affected the actions of both the Union advance along the mountain’s slopes and the Confederates desperately trying to defend every inch of ground during the 'Battle Above the Clouds.'"

Please remember to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the conditions.

For more information about upcoming programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, please contact the Lookout Mountain Visitor Center at 423 821-7786, the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at 706 866-9241, or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/chch.
