Royal Tailor And Capital Kings To Kick Off Spring U-Church Series

  • Thursday, January 22, 2015

Lee University’s U-Church will offer another diverse series of concerts this semester, providing students the opportunity to worship together in a unique chapel format. The line-up includes Royal Tailor featuring Capital Kings this month, Kari Jobe in February, a student-led “Evening of Worship” in March, and Jon Foreman in April.

Opening the season this Sunday will be Royal Tailor and Capital Kings, two up-and-coming pop bands.

Royal Tailor includes lead singer Tauren Wells, guitarist DJ Cox, drummer Jarrod Ingram, and bassist Blake Hubbard. The group performed over 300 shows in its first two years. Both of the band’s albums, “Black & White” and “Royal Tailor,” have been nominated for Grammy awards. Royal Tailor has been recognized by Google as one of the “50 bands under 30,” and has toured with Casting Crowns, Britt Nicole, Newsong and was a part of the Winter Jam 2013 tour.

Royal Tailor hopes to “move feet, hearts and minds, encouraging listeners to get closer to both God and their community - to focus on coming together when too many people are pulling apart.” Prior to signing with Essential Records, the band spent a year working at a church in Granite City, Il., mentoring and teaching kids to form their own worship bands, an experience that Ingram said instilled a valuable sense of patience and purpose.

Formed while members Jon White and Cole Walowac were still living in their hometown of Washington, D.C., Capital Kings is an innovative pop/electronic duo. Their debut self-titled album was released in January 2013 and entered the Billboard Christian Albums Chart in the Top 5. CCM Magazine calls their music an “ingenious blend of electronic, hip hop, pop, and even some dubstep.” They have remixed for Christian artists including TobyMac, Mandisa, Group 1 Crew, and Britt Nicole, and are currently touring with TobyMac. Capital Kings was also nominated for a 2013 Dove Award for New Artist of the Year.

"When planning the spring ‘15 lineup, we looked at artists who could kick off the new year with high energy performances,” said Josh York, U-Church director. “Bringing these amazing artists to Lee is exactly what we had in mind. Both Royal Tailor and Capital Kings provide an energetic show that will be sure to get people excited."

Kari Jobe will continue the U-Church series on Feb. 22. A well-known singer and songwriter, Jobe has received one Grammy Award nomination and two Dove awards since her debut in 2009. Currently the worship pastor at Gateway Church in Texas and the Christian worship band Gateway Worship, Jobe has traveled internationally on mission trips to lead worship. She has released three albums, the most recent of which is a live worship recording titled “Majestic.”

U-Church will present student-led “An Evening of Worship” on March 29, offering a time of corporate worship and communion. This has quickly become an on-campus favorite with such themes as “All Things New,” “Personal Revival,” and “Living a Life of Service.”

The final U-Church of the semester will feature singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jon Foreman on April 19. Best known for being the main songwriter, co-founder, and front man of the alternative rock band Switchfoot, Foreman has worked with numerous other artists on projects and has four independent recordings of his own. In November 2014, Foreman announced four additional independent recordings to be released this year. Over the years, Foreman has become known for his honest lyrics, highly prolific song-writing, and his involvement in various humanitarian endeavors.

U-Church is a free, non-ticketed event for students, alumni and the community. Seating is first- come, first-served.
