Outdoor Chattanooga Winter Workshops Open With Purna Yoga On Jan. 15

  • Monday, January 12, 2015

Outdoor Chattanooga will begin its 2015 Winter Workshop series with an introduction to Purna Yoga on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the department’s facility at 200 River St. in Coolidge Park. The workshop, called Ease into Yoga, will be taught by professional yoga therapist and instructor Jayne Cagle.

The workshop requires pre-registration. People may register by emailing Jayne@OneJoyfulYoga.com or calling or texting 423 344-6501.

The free Winter Workshop series, now in its sixth year, offers the public opportunities to learn skills that will increase their knowledge, fitness and enjoyment of Chattanooga’s outdoors.  In addition to the yoga class, this year’s schedule also includes workshops on fire starting, knots for paddlers and paddling safety, a Leave no Trace seminar on how to take care of bodily necessities in the woods and a three-part class on making your own outdoor video, co hosted by the Lookout Wild Film Festival and Chattanooga State Community College.

“Each year, we try to bring in some of the best experts in their field to give the public solid skills for the outdoors,” said Terri Chapin, Outdoor Chattanooga Recreation Programs coordinator and organizer of this year’s workshops.  “I’m particularly excited about the three-part, Make Your Own Outdoor Video workshops happening in February.”

Professional videographers Louis Lee, Drew Renner, Corey Wentz and Philip Luckeywill teach three classes: Getting the Shot, Editing Essentials, and It’s a Wrap: How to Finish and Share Your Video. Interested members of the public can attend one, two or all of the classes, depending on what they want to learn. No equipment is necessary and beginners are encouraged to attend.

Mike Schillinger of the TN Valley Canoe Club and American Canoe Assoc. SwiftwaterRescue Instructor, will host Paddlers, Know Your Knots! The class will cover a few essential knots that paddlers need to know, especially in rescue situations. Outdoorsman Joshua McKinley will demonstrate the bow drill and flint techniques for starting camp fires, and Terri Chapin, Leave No Trace Master Educator, will conduct a seminar on How to Poop in the Woods. The workshop will cover essential techniques for leaving no impact on the environment with bodily necessities.

All of the Winter Workshops are free to all interested members of the public.  No special equipment or experience is necessary. No registration is required other than for Ease into Yoga on Jan. 15.
