Neighbors Split, But Planning Commission Favors Dollar General On Shallowford

  • Monday, January 12, 2015

Neighbors were split, but the Planning Commission on Monday voted in favor of a new Dollar General on Shallowford Road west of Mae Dell Road.

Joe Proctor of the Broadway Group is proposing the 9,000-square-foot retail store.

The 1.4-acre site currently has one vacant lot and a small house on a second lot.

The staff of the Regional Planning Agency recommended that the Planning Commission deny the rezoning, saying that section should remain residential.

Georgia Eastman, who has headed her neighborhood association for 19 years, said there was another Dollar General a mile away on Lee Highway. She was opposed, but acknowledged that some in her group wanted it while others did not.

A resident across the street was for it, saying the section was likely to go commercial and "there are many worse developments than a Dollar General."
