  • Saturday, September 20, 2014
After a tough loss to Maryville on Friday night, the Covenant volleyball team was back in action on Saturday afternoon at Oglethorpe University for a tri-match. The Lady Scots fell in five sets to unbeaten Millsaps in the day's first match before sweeping host Oglethorpe in the second match.

With the split, Covenant goes to 10-6 overall on the season.

In the first match, Covenant took a 2-1 match lead before falling to a Millsaps team that is now 11-0 on the season. Millsaps won with set scores of 25-16, 23-25, 24-26, 25-15, 15-6.

Ginny Moore had a double-double of 12 kills and 20 digs, while Chelsea VanDyk continued her solid play with 10 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists.
Schuyler Moore had 18 assists and 15 digs to go with seven kills. Chloe Carlson had 21 digs to lead Covenant.

After dropping the first set 25-16, Covenant responded by taking the second set. With the score tied at 20, the Lady Scots scored the next three points as Ginny Moore tallied a kill between two Millsaps errors. Millsaps rallied to tie the score at 23, but another kill from Ginny Moore and an attack error by Millsaps gave Covenant a 25-23 set win.

Covenant took an early 5-1 lead in the third set as VanDyk collected a pair of kills. Millsaps came back with six straight points and the teams would go back-and-forth for most of the set. Trailing 24-23, Ginny Moore tied the score with a kill and VanDyk ended the set with a solo block followed by a kill giving Covenant a 2-1 match lead.

Millsaps would control the final two sets of play as they rallied for the victory.

Millsaps got 17 kills and 26 digs from Caroline McKey and 28 assists from Taylor Ziegler.

In the day's second match, the Lady Scots had little trouble dispatching Oglethorpe in three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-15.

VanDyk led the way with eight kills, two solo block and one combined block. Chloe Carlson had 16 digs and Schuyler Moore added 17 assists and eight digs. Christina Argaez also had eight kills with eight digs.

Covenant had 14 kills in the opening set and would lead for the entire game. The Lady Scots scored four of the final five points with kills from Hannah Rogers and Maddie Wieskamp to end the set.

It was more of the same in the second set as Covenant took an early lead and never looked back. The Lady Scots took an 18-8 lead after a Rogers kill and, after a brief Oglethorpe rally, Argaez ended the set with a service ace. In the third set, Covenant would lead by as many as 11 points after a Ginny Moore ace made it 23-12.

Oglethorpe (8-6) got 13 kills from McKenna Bondarenko and 26 assists from Katie Stewart.

Covenant will travel to Demorest, Ga., on Wednesday, Sept. 24 to face USA South foe Piedmont at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Scots will be back in Barnes PE Center next Saturday, Sept. 27 for a USA South quad-match.
