Anne Caldwell

Anne Gunter Caldwell died peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2014, at the age of 85, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Chattanooga to Mildred Jackson and Aubrey Milford Gunter on May 4, 1929.  She attended Clara Carpenter School, Northside Junior High School, and Chattanooga (“City”) High School, where she graduated first in her class.  She then went on to the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was a Sigma Chi Sweetheart.  She graduated from the Erlanger Medical Technician Program.   As a young woman she modeled for Loveman’s Department Store.

Anne was involved in many civic activities over her lifetime, including serving as a United Way Neighborhood Division Chairman, President of the Junior Kosmos Club, Valamont Women’s Club, Chattanooga Bar Auxiliary, Chairman of the Friends of the Signal Mountain Library, and the Garden Club of Signal Mountain.  She served on the Baroness Erlanger Foundation Board and was a 20 year Board Member of CADAS (Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services), on which she also served as Chairman.  She served on the Vestry of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and also was a Sunday School teacher there for many years.  She served as President of the Thrasher School P.T.A, which all of her children attended.

After Anne graduated from school, she worked for Dr. Phillip Livingston.  Soon after, she went on a blind date set up by friends Jane and Jerry Harper and met Tom Caldwell.  They were married just a few months later on Feb. 14, 1954, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.  Jane and Jerry continue to be dear friends of Anne and Tom.

Anne loved animals, especially cats and birds.  She also loved flowers of any kind, but especially wildflowers.  She loved to hike with her family in the woods near their home in Summertown and was delighted to find wildflowers and to share her knowledge of them with her children.  She also loved to travel, and she and Tom took numerous trips to Europe and Asia, including trips to Israel, Egypt, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.  She especially loved London and Venice.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas Allison Caldwell, and her children: Thomas Allison Caldwell, III (Tac), his wife, Nancy, and their children Lillian and Annie, of Signal Mountain;  Joanne Gunter Caldwell Beckman, her husband, Ken Beckman, and their children, Conrad and Nathan, of Signal Mountain;  Grant Hartwig Caldwell, his wife, Beth, and their children, Hannah, Rachel, Noah and Ellie, of Richmond, Virginia; and Craig Jackson Caldwell, his wife Bridget, and Craig’s children, Caleb, Mia and Ben, and step-children, Colleen, Evan and Shea, of Brewster, Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Aubrey Murray Gunter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CADAS, 207 Spears Avenue, Chattanooga, Tn. 37405.

The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the St. Timothy’s Parish Hall, to be followed by a memorial service in the church at 11 a.m. Visit www.lanefh.com to share condolences.  Arrangements by Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, 877-3524.
