George Ricks was voted chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Education during a Thursday evening meeting.
He was nominated by board member Rhonda Thurman.
Board member Donna Horn was voted to be vice chairman for the current school year.
David Testerman was voted to continue his role as TLE representative.
During the meeting, multiple math and literacy consultant contracts were also renewed.
The board discussed the effectiveness of the consultants versus the price.
Vice Chairman Horn suggested surveying teachers to get feedback on the consultants in the classroom.
She said she was concerned "teachers feel more critiqued than coached."
Superintendent Rick Smith said the consultants are especially helpful to new teachers.
He said, "We are structured very differently in regard to literacy and math than we ever have been before."
Various principals and staff members said the literacy and math coaches had helped their schools improve their scores.
Board member Thurman said, "It's $2,500 a day. That's a lot of money. That's a thing that I have a problem with. I think this is just one of those government things that has run amok."
The contract renewals passed, as well as a motion to gather input from teachers.
Board member Greg Martin said, "I think part of our job is to ask if there's a more efficient way we can do it."
