The Dalton State women’s golf team was second after the first day of the Coastal Georgia Invitational, but they knew that they could play even better.

“When everyone else left after Monday’s first round, our girls were on the driving range and the putting green,” said Roadrunner golf coach Jim McGrew.

The top two teams from Monday held their spots through the second and final round of the two-day, 36-hole tournament at the Jekyll Island Golf Club’s Pine Lakes Course.

Norwood University of West Palm Beach, FL (309.

295 – 604) fired a Monday team total of 309. Dalton State (322, 307 – 629) was in second place. Norwood is a member of the NAIA’s Sun Conference.

Dalton State finished 20 strokes better than the third place William Carey University (MS) women (327, 322 – 649).

“I am proud of the way our team continued to improve throughout the tournament,” said McGrew.

Dalton State’s Julia McQuilken led the 62-player field after Monday. She had fired a one-under-par 71.  Northwood’s Elsa Westin (75, 70 –145) was the medalist. Sarah Gillard of Coastal Georgia (73, 75 - 148) finished second and McQuilken finished third (71, 78 – 149).

All four of the counting Lady Roadrunners shot in the 70s on Tuesday. “Anytime you can do that you are giving yourself a chance to win tournaments,” said McGrew.

Dalton State’s fourth counting player, Rachel Rebne, finished tied for 42nd (95, 78 – 173) Also playing for the Lady Roadrunners were Taylor Marie Griner (91, 97 – 188) and Ashley McDonald (101, 90 – 191).                 

The next tournament for the Lady Roadrunners will be in mid-October when they travel to Cleveland, TN to play in the Lee University Lady Flames Invitational.
