The Covenant volleyball team suffered its first home defeat of the season on Tuesday night as visiting Trevecca Nazarene took a 3-0 (25-16, 33-31, 25-22) victory.
Covenant falls to 9-4 on the season. Trevecca Nazarene, a member of NCAA Division II, improves to 7-3 overall.
Chelsea VanDyk, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, led Covenant with 11 kills and a.364 hitting percentage to go along with two service aces and two block assists. Jessica Seehorn had 14 assists with six kills and six digs, while Stephanie Kirkpatrick had a team-high 17 assists. Chloe Carlson accumulated a match-high 24 digs and Ginny Moore had 16 digs and seven kills.
Covenant fell behind early in the first set as the visiting Trojans took a commanding 14-6 lead and would go on to take a 1-0 match lead.
The second set was tightly played from the start as the teams traded the lead nine times and had 16 ties. The Lady Scots took a 22-19 lead on a VanDyk kill and later went ahead 24-22 on a Moore service ace. Trevecca rallied to tie the score at 24 and the teams traded points from there. Covenant had its chances to take the set as they served with the potential game point on five occasions. Ultimately, the Trojans rallied and scored the final three points to take the 33-31 set win.
Trevecca led for most of the third set and held off a Lady Scots rally late in the game to take the match.
Katelyn Atkinson led the Trojans with 18 kills to go with 11 digs. Loren Bennett had 38 assists, while Kayleigh Jarrett recorded 18 digs.
Covenant will be back in action on Friday when they open USA South play against Maryville. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
