The case against JaMichael Harris, charged with criminal homicide, was bound over to a grand jury after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday morning.
Harris, 20, is charged with the death of Inez Burney. Police said Ms. Burney was strangled in her bathtub and had bruises on her neck. Harris also had scratches on his face, consistent with the woman defending herself from an attacker.
Police first came to the scene after a 911 call from Harris.
Harris told police he found the victim "unresponsive" when he arrived.
However, Harris told police he had arrived at 4 p.m. but did not call 911 until 5:30 p.m. He could not account for the lapse in time.
Family members of the victim also told police that Ms. Burney posted photos of a large amount of money around 1 p.m. that same day.
Police said they believed Harris killed the woman because he wanted this money.
Harris was arrested on June 10.
