Prior to today’s McCallie-Baylor tennis match, the last time
McCallie had won the D-II Middle/East Region was in 2008 when current senior
Luke Orthner was in the sixth grade.
Today, the host Blue Tornado (9-1, 3-0) defeated Baylor, 5-2 and
coupled with a 4-3 win against MBA April 10, McCallie wins the Middle/East
Region.
Baylor hosts MBA Thursday in a match to determine second and
third in the region.
Doubles Point: McCallie won two of three doubles matches to
claim the doubles team point and then won four of six singles.
McCallie’s Cody Gubin defeated Marko Mandic, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4
at No.1 singles, while Mandic-Jack Gray (Baylor) defeated Gubin-Turner Voges,
8-2, at No. 1 doubles.
"It was a big lift for our players to win the doubles point heading into singles," said McCallie coach Eric Voges who saw his players win first sets in five of the six singles matches and win three of four singles matches in straight sets.
"This win gives us the region title for the first time since 2008 and I feel to finish first is important for our players."
D-II Region Singles
and Doubles: the individual tournament will be held Friday and Saturday
with the top five in singles and doubles advancing to the state tournament May
22-23 in Murfreesboro.
