Doris Jean Butler Newton, 83, died on Sunday, December 21, 2014.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, and was still actively working as a private sitter and caregiver.

Doris lived a full and active life.  She earned a fine reputation as office manager and bookkeeper during her working years.  She was involved in many community and church activities.  Doris was past president of the Foxwood Heights Garden Club, past president of the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and was awarded Business Woman of the Year during her tenure with the ABWA. She was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church where she served as the pianist. Doris later joined Brainerd Baptist Church in 1965 and was a lifelong member where she served as the young adults teacher, choir member and soloist, church hostess/wedding coordinator, director of the Senior Adults Ministry, director of “Keenagers”, and she was also involved in Home Bound Ministries.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Hazel Butler and her beloved husband of 53 years, Daniel Anderson Newton, Jr.

She is survived by her son, Daniel Anderson Newton III and daughter-in-law, Margaret Newton, daughter, Dawn Newton Zimmerman, and son Tracy Alan Newton; grandchildren, Danielle Newton, Daniel Newton, and Claire Newton; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Ed Woodham, brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Joan Butler; and six nieces and nephews. Special lifelong friends, extended family members, and her church family also survive her.

In her belongings, Doris had penned the following, leaving us a great remembrance of her life: “What we will always remember is the way she laughed, the stories she told, the guidance she gave.  What we will always know is the friendship she shared, the sacrifices she made, the example she was.  What we will always feel is her love.”

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 28, at 4:30 p.m. at Brainerd Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Gallaty and Dr. Steve Rowland officiating.  Burial will be on Monday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2- 4 p.m. at the church.
