McCallie Receives $19 Million Estate Gift

  • Thursday, December 18, 2014

McCallie has received a $19 million estate gift from an alumnus. The Board of Trustees has decided to place the gift in the school's endowment.

"The growing endowment is vital to our strength in both the short-term and long-term, and it enables us to be strategic, bold and aspirational," said Headmaster Lee Burns '87 and Chairman of the Board Elliott Davenport '77 in a letter.  "As you may know, a portion of the interest from the endowment supports, on an annual basis, a number of our programs, including providing professional learning opportunities for our teachers and financial aid for talented boys.

"Each year, thousands of alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents and other friends make gifts to the school. They are a testament to the profound and lifelong impact that McCallie has on our students and graduates. Those gifts are essential to the extraordinary education we provide boys. A McCallie education is expensive for sure, and the philanthropic support of many is the foundation for the excellence in all areas of McCallie.

"Our recent gift is an affirmation of the significance of the McCallie experience and the power of our mission today. This single gift strengthens us, but it helps to increase the impact of all other gifts as well, as we now receive these gifts from an enhanced position. Excellence builds upon excellence. Strength builds upon strength.

"We are most grateful for the support of all McCallie constituents, and we invite and encourage your continued investments in the boys and faculty of McCallie.

"-On McCallie... and onward McCallie."
