Howard “Bud” Elliott, 91, of Chattanooga died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 14, 2014.
Bud was truly a member of “the greatest generation”, beloved by his family and many friends, and will long be remembered and missed.
Bud was born on Nov. 20, 1923, in Charlotte, N.C., where he grew up and attended high school. After one year of college, he enlisted in the Army in 1943 and went ashore at Utah Beach on D-Day with the 2nd Armored Division. He fought his way across France and Germany with the 11th Armored, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and helping liberate the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Bud received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and multiple ribbons for his service.
After the war, Bud married his high school sweetheart Mary Anna Hallenbeck and enrolled at North Carolina State College. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. Over the next 45 years, Bud worked as a project manager on many water and sewage treatment plants and pipeline projects all over the southeast.
Bud and Mary were married for 60 years and raised four children, including Sarah (Sally) Anne Elliott Miller, who preceded both her parents in death. Mary passed away in 2005.
Surviving children are Rebecca (Becky) Elliott of Maryville, Tn., Linda E. Sneary of Chattanooga, and David W. Elliott of Minneapolis, Mn.
Other family includes son-in-law, Kevin E. Sneary; granddaughter, Sarah Sneary Wernsing and her husband Keith A. Wernsing of Fort Collins, Co.; granddaughter, Anna (Kate) Owens and her partner Hannah Fillman of Fort Collins; granddaughter, Molly M. Sneary and her fiancé Aaron Jackson of Knoxville; and granddaughter Cassie Elliott Hunter and her husband Brent Hunter of Knoxville. Great-grandchildren are Aidan, Ella, and Ally Hunter; and Elizabeth and Nathaniel Wernsing. Bud is also survived by his sister, Martha E. Lawing of Charlotte, and several nieces and nephews.
Bud’s happiest times were out on his boat and spending time with friends and family.
The graveside service will be Friday, Dec. 19, at 12:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37404. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 7555 Ooltewah-Georgetown Road, Ooltewah, Tn. 37363, with the Reverend Lou Parsons and the Reverend Buckley Robbins officiating. All are invited to gather at the reception held before and after the memorial service at the church.
