HubCX Cyclocross Race Is This Saturday

Cyclists From All Over The Southeast Invade Greenway Farms

  • Thursday, December 11, 2014

Greenway Farms will be abuzz on Saturday with racers and spectators watching racers compete in the nation’s fastestgrowing cycling sport – cyclocross. As the name implies, cyclocross is a “cross” between onroad and offroad cycling.

Racers will face a variety of terrain, including grass, gravel, dirt and pavement, along with obstacles that will require them to dismount and remount their bikes several times during the race. Tight turns and elevation changes will challenge participants on the circuitous course and provide ample entertainment, usually at the expense of the racers, to those watching the event.

“The short course allows spectators to watch most of the race from one viewing area or just a short walk away,” said Spencer Whittier, a Chattanooga native and elite cyclocross racer for the Hub Endurance Chattanooga team.

“Fan participation is a big part of cyclocross. Cowbells, horns, heckling and dangling dollar bills for racers to grab or even bacon hand-ups, are standard fare at events.”

Multiple races will occur throughout the day, starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m., separating participants by gender, age (nine and up) and skill level. For those that are new to cyclocross, beginner racers will be at noon and 3:30 p.m. for women and men respectively. There will also be a “Lil’ Belgians” race at 1:45 p.m. for those under nine years old. Bring a bike or trike and a helmet for the little one and let them get a taste of cyclocross racing for free.

Famous Nater’s will also be onsite throughout the event, so bring the family and enjoy the day.
