Model UN France Team from GPS
The Best Delegation (France) and Runner-Up Delegation (Mexico) awards both went to GPS at the Southeastern High School Model United nations conference. GPS sponsor Glen Vey said the teams “distinguished themselves.” This is the third time in four years that GPS has been recognized as Best Delegation.
This year’s conference hosted 13 schools from Chattanooga and beyond, including teams from Memphis and Birmingham. In all, 55 countries were represented by 388 delegates during the three-day event.
Winning the Best Delegate award for their committees from the French delegation were junior Caroline West (economics and finance), senior Hira Munir (social and humanitarian), junior Allyce Buniak (legal), and senior Najia Humayun (environment). Honorable mention awards went to junior Anjali Ravee (World Health Organization) and senior Anjali Chandra (intellectual property).
The Mexico delegation tallied two Honorable Mentions, one for Leah Baxter (social and humanitarian) and Gabrielle Cox (legal). Junior Shivani Modi received recognition for her work with the Digital Press Corps, the journalism arm of the conference.
As a result of their Best Delegate designations, Ms. West, Ms. Munir, Ms. Buniak and Ms. Humayun are eligible to attend the National High School Model UN conference in March. Also selected to attend NHSMUN were senior Anina Mu and Anjali Ravee
Junior Ayushi Sinha served this year as the chair of the Legal Committee. She has been selected as the 2015 undersecretary general, in charge of the logistics and arrangements for next year's conference.
SHSMUN is "organized by high schoolers for high schoolers,” according to the organization’s website. The students, divided into 9-10 committees for their countries, engage in debate, negotiate, write resolutions, and reach compromise on topics.
