City Council members were told Tuesday night that the demolition of the Harriet Tubman complex is being carried out safely and on schedule.
Several council members said they had heard concerns from community members about the work.
The site is being redeveloped by the city.
Dennis Malone, assistant city engineer, said the demolition is about 50 percent complete and all buildings should be down by January. During February, the separation of materials will continue and the site will be cleared.
He said a firm hired by the city has completely abated 63 buildings with 12 left to finish over the next couple of weeks.
Mr. Malone said the asbestos abatement contractor, Environmental Abatement Inc., "is doing an excellent job."
He said John Schultz of the Air Pollution Control Bureau checks the site 3-4 times a day for any air pollutants. He said there have been "no complaints" on air quality.
Mr. Malone said a test of the air at the fence line shows it well within allowable amounts.
