Robert Bishop Powell of Hixson, Tennessee, died on November 23, 2014.

Son of the late Conrad Powell and Mabel Powell of Chattanooga, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jan Hamilton Powell; his sister, Sister Joseph Mary Powell O.P. (Barbara) of Nashville, and extended family, including Bishop cousins and Hamilton in-laws.

Chattanooga was Robert’s home for his entire life. He attended Normal Park Elementary, Northside Junior High School and graduated Chattanooga High School in 1965.

After discovering theater set design in high school, Robert earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Memphis State University. At the Chattanooga Little Theatre he was technical director for a number of years. He often recalled working with talented casts and crews, and appreciated the efforts of volunteers who made local theatre possible.

Later, Robert graduated the Chattanooga Police Academy and joined the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga police force. He rose to lieutenant before leaving to work in security. He was retired at the time of his death.

Robert loved traveling with his wife to visit historic sites, cities and areas of natural beauty. Favorite destinations included Alaska, Hawaii, San Francisco, Maine, Seattle and Quebec. He had a keen interest in the Civil War and collected books related to the subject. His joys included cigars, well-acted movies, talking to good friends, fine art and food. He was never happier than when one of his beloved cats was curled in his lap or by his side.

Late in his life, Robert discovered the special rewards of being an uncle. He was very proud of Jessica, Dylan, Jacob and Natalie, and his goddaughter, Eames.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Dr. David Harr officiating.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Nov. 25, from 5-8 p.m. at the North Chapel.

Donations can be made to the Humane Educational Society, Inc. in his memory.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn. 37343.
