Lee Golfers Third At NCCAA National Championship

The Lee women's golf team came up a few shots short in their attempt to repeat as champions as they settled for a third place finish at the 2014 NCCAA National Championship after the conclusion of play on Wednesday at the Hombre Golf Club .

The Lady Flames rallied back from a disappointing 323 in round two to post a 314 in the third and final round.
Gulf South Conference foe Shorter University (936) took home the top spot while Dallas Baptist finished in second with a 940 team total.


Junior Bernadette Little led the way for Lee on Wednesday with a 5-over 77 and finished in fourth-place for the championship with a 234-total. Sophomore-transfer Cailey Gino also carded a 77 and ended play with a 239. Freshman Sam Burrus dipped to an 81 but finished in fifth-place overall(235). Senior Madison Alexander rounded out the scores that counted with a 7-over 79 for a 242 finish while Caroline Moore ended with an 82 (246).

Little and Burrus were recognized as NCCAA All-Americans at the conclusion of the event for their performance in the 54-hole championship.

Dallas Baptist's Erin Barrington shot a 2-over par 74 to finish one stroke ahead of Oklahoma Christian's Anna Arrese Cortadellas for the individual championship.

FLAMES FINISH FOURTH
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The Lee men's golf team slipped to fourth-place in the final round of the NCCAA National Championship on Wednesday at the 6,613 yard par-72 Hombre Golf Club.

After rounds of 292 and 299 the Flames slid to 311 to finish with a 902-team total. After claiming the program's first national championship last season the Lee men came up short in their bid for a repeat.

Colorado Christian (892) fired a final round 303 to claim the title finishing five-strokes better than second-place Oklahoma Christian (897). Dallas Baptist followed with a 901-total to clip the Lee squad by one.

Taylor Davis led the way for the Flames with a 4-over 76 in round three. Davis shot a 3-under par 69 to open the championship but carded a 76 in the final two rounds to finish in third-place with a 221. Peyton Sliger followed right behind as he ended with a 77 222-total and placed fourth overall. Both players were named NCCAA All-Americans.

Matt Strube (226) and Corey Sheppard (234) each shot a 79 while Ryne Thompson rounded out the scoring with an 85 (241).

David Ryan (Oklahama Wesleyan) won the individual title with a final round 75 (216) finishing three-strokes better than Josh Aguilar of Dallas Baptist.
