PEF College Knowledge Lunch Breaks Offered For Students, Parents And Staff

  • Wednesday, October 29, 2014

High school students, parents and educators are invited to attend the Public Education Foundation's College Knowledge Lunch Breaks.  These monthly lunch time workshops will focus on college-related topics such as essay writing, college financial planning and college admission.  Other adults who work with or advise students on the road to post-secondary success are invited as well.

PEF VP of College & Career Success Stacy Lightfoot said, "One of the most important decisions our students will make is to continue on to college. PEF’s College and Career Readiness work focuses on encouraging students to attend college, and provides them and their families with support and access to help them accomplish this goal.

We currently have two free College Knowledge Lunch Breaks scheduled.  PEF will provide an optional lunch for $5 a person.  Lunches must be pre-ordered.  Please RSVP at www.pefchattanooga.org/registerapply.

Session One: How to Plan for College; presented by Stacy Lightfoot, VP College & Career              Success, PEF

When: Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Noon

Where:  EPB Building (7th floor) 10 West MLK Blvd.

As a parent, counselor and trusted adult, your encouragement plays a critical role in helping students prepare for college.  Students rely on their parents, school counselors, mentors and advisors to ensure that they are prepared for the college admission process.  Your goal is to convince students that college is within grasp. There's so much to consider when it comes to getting ready for college: where to go, what to study, how to apply, how to pay for it all and more.  Parents and students are often lost in the process.  It's never too early or too late to explore options for college or career school.  In this session, we will walk through some key steps in preparing for college and provide resources that can help you and your family along the way.

Session Two: Top 10 College Financial Planning Mistakes Parents Make; presented by Chris Ford, Private Financial Advisor, SunTrust Investment Services, Inc. College Planning Essentials, 529s and their role in college planning

When: Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Noon

Where:  SunTrust Bank, 736 Market Street

With very little attention to this subject, it’s no wonder that some parents are making mistakes about how to appropriately plan and save money for their student’s education. With so little time between a child’s birth and the start of college, it can be difficult to recover from college planning mistakes. Whether you’ve just had your first child or major college expenditures are just a few years away, it’s never too late to make sure you’re on the right track. We hope you will join us for this informative presentation.

(Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks, and charges and expenses of a 529 plan carefully before investing. An official statement, which contains this and other important information, can be obtained from your financial professional. Please read carefully prior to investing.
