David Glenn Fussell, 67, of Lookout Mountain, died on the evening of Friday, October 24, 2014.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Fussell, daughters, Holly Fussell (Mike Seal) and Susanna Fussell Dodson (Andrew Dodson) and their mother, Lindsay Fussell, son, Patton Fussell, stepson, Cooper Johnson (Anna Brooke), grandchildren, Addie, Cooper Jr., Charlie and Lottie Johnson; brother, Michael Fussell (Beverly); sister, Betty Ann Fussell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Leland T. and Frances Fussell, and his brother Robert Fussell (Jean).

David was a graduate of Brainerd High School class of ’65, and the University of Chattanooga (’69), where he served as Captain of both schools’ baseball teams. He was later drafted as a catcher by the San Diego Padres, and inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. He served on the UC Foundation board, and was former president of the UTC Alumni Association.  While at UC, he was an active member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Like his father before him, David spent his entire 40-plus-year career at Unum Group (formerly Provident Life). He spent summers as a teen working in the mailroom, then rose through the ranks of the Investment Department and retired from Unum Group as chief investment officer in 2011. He was currently on the board of Cornerstone Bancshares, and serving as president of the board for the Fairyland Club.

A strong advocate of service to his community, David was a longtime supporter and board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Chattanooga, where he positively impacted the lives of countless youth. He was currently on the City Council of Lookout Mountain, previously served on its planning commission, and was a Reflection Riding Arboretum volunteer.

David could be seen most days walking his enthusiastic lab, Lucy, along the streets of Lookout Mountain, indulging in his passion for gardening, and playing tennis with friends at Manker Patten or the Fairyland Club.

The visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m., in the Connector at First Presbyterian, where David served as a deacon, with a noon service to follow in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to and participation with the Boys & Girls Club of Chattanooga.

Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421.
