Spartans Sweep UTC In Conference Volleyball Match

  • Friday, October 24, 2014
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to UNCG Friday evening at Maclellan Gym, bringing UTC’s Southern Conference record to 5-4 while the Spartans improved to 5-3.

“UNCG came out ready to play,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “They played the way we needed to so give them credit.  We have to regroup, get ready for tomorrow and forget about tonight while learning from this match.  Mercer is another tough team that’s going to bring a fight to Maclellan Gym.”

Despite the loss, sophomore Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) and Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) each led the team with nine kills each.
 Davenport posted a team-best 11.0 points, while Wieser averaged a team-best .438 hitting percentage on 16 attacks.

UNCG took charge in the first and third sets, winning 25-18 and 25-15.  The second, a 25-16 Spartan victory, was Chattanooga’s strongest offensive set with a .200 hitting percentage.  The Mocs did not hit above .100 in the first and third frames.

Chattanooga managed one block in the contest.  Juniors Julimar Alvarado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) combined for a block in the first set, but the Spartans would out-block the Mocs by seven on the night.

Sophomore Nicole Sumida (Hixson, Tenn.) led Chattanooga with four kills in the first set, while Wieser and Davenport each totaled four kill sin the second.  Wieser collected three kills in the final frame to top the stat sheet.

Chattanooga is back in action tomorrow night as Mercer visits Maclellan Gym since joining the Southern Conference.  First serve is set for 6 p.m.  Live stats and video links can both be found on the volleyball schedule page.
