Mocs Tennis Team To Georgia Southern Championships

  • Thursday, October 23, 2014

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team has a pair of individuals headed to the Georgia Southern Championships this weekend.  Action takes places in Statesboro, Ga., on Oct. 24-26.

Sophomore Gino Delavalle and freshman Michael Birnbaum represent the Mocs this weekend.  Delavalle went 3-1 at the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic earlier in the month.  He has battled through injuries this fall, but looks to close out the semester on a strong note.

Birnbaum took part in the Baras and the season-opening Mercer Bear Gridiron Classic.  He goes for his first singles win when he takes the court this weekend.

The duo will also team up in doubles action for the first time.  Delavalle has not played doubles this season, while Birnbaum went 1-2 in doubles at the Baras.

“I am looking forward to getting these guys some matches against good competition this weekend,” stated UTC head coach Carlos Garica.  “Gino has been injured some this fall, but has worked through it and I think the experience will be good for Michael.  I also think they could make a good doubles team, so I want to see how they play together.”

This is the final fall tournament for the Mocs.  They will pick up back up with dual matches in January.  Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for a full recap of this weekend’s action, following the conclusion pf play each day.
