Chattanooga Collaborative Senior Housing Concept Presented Thursday

  • Thursday, October 23, 2014

The Chattanooga Collaborative Senior Housing concept was presented outlining a model for a shared lifestyle in an urban setting to a group of senior citizens at the Mean Mug Coffeehouse on Thursday.  The group seeks additional seniors (55 and up) to join with them in establishing a model in Chattanooga that encourages community engagement and longer life by design.

“What we desire is to not have our lives, diets, and activities determined by a corporation---This is self control of our lives,” said group member Jay Ku.

“The benefits for such housing are enormous,” stated member Finn Bille, the emcee for the evening.  “People who join in this community are more likely to avoid long-term institutional care, develop mutually supportive relationships, live economically, and engage in healthy activities as they age-in-place, he added.

The group has purchased property at 1511 Washington St. on which to place a sustainably designed eight-unit condominium style building.  Private units will range in size from 400-1,000 square feet, but all residents have access to a large common space designed for social interaction plus laundry, kitchen, favorite activities space, guest bedrooms, and maintenance storage areas.  The urban setting in Chattanooga Southside allows for walking, biking and bus transportation to the many downtown amenities.  Purchase of a unit in the condominium includes a portion of the common space.
