Dorothy Aikman, 84, a resident of Cleveland, Tennessee, died on October 11, 2014.

She was born in Morristown, Tn., the daughter of the late Laura Cox Bishop and William Bishop, who were long-time residents of Cleveland. She graduated from Bradley Central High School and attended Madison College, Madison, Tn., for secretarial science. In 1970, she moved with her husband and family to Beirut, Lebanon, where they served as missionaries for the Seventh-day Adventist Church until 1976, when they returned to the United States, settled in Collegedale, Tn. and eventually retired in Cleveland.

Throughout her life, she was employed in clerical and secretarial work. One of her greatest joys was providing love and care for foster children in the 1960’s. She said, “ All children need to be loved. I just wanted to give them love and a good start in life.”

She is preceded in death by her husband James Aikman.

She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Aikman; son, William Aikman; grandchildren, Janae, Dillon, and Scott Beck; and her sister, Jean Croghan.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Collegedale Cemetery in Collegedale with pastor Ted Dubs officiating.

Family and friends will be received at the residence for remembrance and refreshments after the service at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Bowman Hills SDA Church, 300 Westview Dr. NE, Cleveland, Tn. 37312.
