Local Sorority Receives National Health Fair Grant

  • Saturday, October 11, 2014

Based on its successful philanthropic efforts in 2013, the Theta Phi Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) was given the opportunity to apply for a national grant through the Sigma Kappa Foundation.  The local chapter was selected and notified in early June that they would receive the Giving Circle Grant for the maximum amount of $2,500.  The purpose of the Giving Circle Grants are for Sigma Kappa collegiate chapters to offer ways in which to further promote their philanthropic efforts and make a difference in their community.

Theta Phi was one of nine Sigma Kappa chapters in the nation to have the honor of implementing the grant in 2014.

The grant was written by Kat Brewer, Chapter President, with the hopes of sponsoring an educational health fair by partnering with the UTC School of Nursing and other local organizations.  Brewer and fifth semester nursing students have been preparing to execute a successful event that creates awareness and addresses the specific health care needs of residents living in Patten Towers.

The Sigma Kappa Cares-Infection Prevention Health Fair will take place on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. outside Patten Towers located at 1 E 11th Street in downtown Chattanooga.  The services are open to residents of Patten Towers, the homeless, and any other members of the community that need free health consultation.  The Health Fair will include information on infection prevention such as hand hygiene, cleaning/disinfecting techniques, and blood pressure screenings, as well as education and services provided through Chattanooga Cares on sexual health and HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C screenings.  Participants will receive a complimentary lunch, leave with useful resources, and be eligible to win a variety of door prizes.

“It is our honor to bring this opportunity to the Chattanooga community.  Our organization is deeply committed to our value of service, and we look forward to making a difference in the lives of others,” shared Ms. Brewer.
