Lee University Wind Ensemble
On the heels of its appearance at the university’s recent Celebration, the Lee University Wind Ensemble will begin its official season with a concert on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.
The concert will feature a diverse collection of selections both old and new. Opening the evening are two numbers from James Stephenson and Daniel French, newer names on the concert band scene. Stephenson’s “American Fanfare” opens the program, followed by a quiet and moving composition by French, “As One Listens To The Rain,” inspired by a poem of Octavio Paz.
Also featured will be Sousa’s “Nobles Of The Mystic Shrine,” William Bolcom’s final movement of his fifth symphony, “Machine,” and Claude Smith’s “Incidental Suite,” three short movements typical of the composer’s unique voicing.
Three distinctive and discordant works will conclude the evening’s performance: “Corsican Litany” by Vaclav Nehlybel provides a dramatically brutal composition inspired by a story of vengeance; Ralph Vaughn Williams’s perfect counterpoint embraces the asymmetrical flow of a 19th century Welsh Hymn, “Rhosymedre”; and Dr. David Holsinger’s “Symphonia Glorioso,” commissioned by Lee University in 2006 to honor Lee President Paul Conn on his 20th year as president. This composition is based on the 1906 Charles Jones hymn “All I Need.”
The 55-member Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Holsinger, is made up of students from a number of different majors across campus and several invited community members. It is an auditioned group and is considered the primary ensemble for wind and percussion majors in the school of music.
This event is free and open to the public.
