The City Council on Tuesday approved the $1.1 million inner portion of a new city-county firing range on 11th Street.

Catamount Constructors had the low bid for the indoor range bullet trap and targeting systems.

The entire project is set to cost over $4 million, with $1.5 million each coming from the city and county and the rest of a federal grant that was obtained earlier.

It will replace the outdoor shooting range on Moccasin Bend.

Council members were assured that the county will provide 50 percent for construction as well as the operation.

The council also approved a $1.5 million fire hall at 38th Street and 8th Avenue in East Lake.

Councilman Chris Anderson said he and new Fire Chief Lamar Flint canvassed the nearby residents and they welcome the security of the fire hall.

B&W Contractors (Cherokee Construction Company) had the low bid.

The council also voted to allow the wine store at the new Enzo's Market on Main Street to sell high-gravity beer in addition to wine. Council members said they had received no calls in objection.

A $350,000 project will add new sidewalks in the vicinity of the Glass Street Collective and the Center for Integrative Medicine in East Chattanooga. the Center for Integrative Medicine will provide $17,000 in funding.
