Lee University’s Faculty Woodwind Quintet will perform in the next Performing Arts Series event at Lee University on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel. The Quintet includes Eric Anderson, Peter Cain, Robert Burks, Janet Hale and Gordon James.
The quintet will perform “La Cheminée du Roi” by René Darius Mihaud and “Three Shanties” by Malcolm Arnold. Faculty pianist Perry Mears will join them for a performance of the Quintet in E-flat Major, KV 452, by W. A. Mozart.
Eric Anderson, the group’s bassoonist, has been the principal bassoonist of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and Wind Quintet since 1996. He also currently plays third contrabassoon with the Alabama Symphony. Anderson earned his bachelor of music degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and completed graduate work at Rice University.
The quintet’s clarinetist, Dr. Peter Cain, studied at Vanderbilt University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and received his doctor of musical arts degree in 2012. Cain was a soloist with the Knoxville Symphony, the Paloma Wind Quintet and with the CCM Chamber Players in 2009.
Oboist Robert Burks studied under Richard Woodhams, principal oboe at Philadelphia, at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music. He was accepted into the Cleveland Institute of Music, followed by the Columbus Symphony, Honolulu Symphony and finally Chattanooga as principal oboe in 1981. He has also performed with the Atlanta Symphony on several occasions.
Janet Hale is a flutist and has played for CSO since 1972. This year marks her 40th season. Hale has studied under David vanVactor, Judith Bentley and Warren Little. She received her master’s in flute performance and a bachelor of music degree from the University of Tennessee.
Gordon James, horn, has been the principal horn for CSO since 1987. James also substitutes for the Huntsville Symphony, the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He earned degrees from Bethany Lutheran College, Peabody Conservatory and North Texas State University.
The concert is open to the public and is free.
