The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team opens its season Friday in a familiar location. Head Coach Mark Guhne’s five-some tee off at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on the Farm in nearby Rocky Face Ga.
The Carpet Capital Collegiate Championship is one of the most prestigious titles in college golf. It is known as the “Masters of Collegiate Golf”.
“When we won in 2008, it meant our program had arrived,” Guhne said. “This is one of the best tournaments our guys will ever play, amateur or pro. It is a special event at a special place.”
It is no surprise that senior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) leads the Mocs to the Farm in his fourth appearance in the event. The U.S. Amateur Champ is joined by senior Alex Ratliff (Kingsport, Tenn.), juniors Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) as well as sophomore Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland).
UTC faces stiff competition per usual in the event. The select group of 12 from the previous few years has added three new teams. NCAA runner-up Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, LSU, Middle Tennessee, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wake Forest all return, while 2012 NCAA Champion Texas joins the party with North Florida, a top 10 team in 2011-12, and North Carolina.
The tournament opens on Friday, September 7, and runs through Sunday, September 9. It is a 54-hole event with 18 holes played per day. Follow @GoMocsMGLF on Twitter for regular updates on play at the course. Live scoring and tee time links will be on GoMocs.com when available.
