Hakeem Files Notice Of Campaign Treasurer For City Council District 9 Race; McCullough May Run For Seat Held By Deborah Scott

Wednesday, September 05, 2012

Former three-time City Council Chairman Yusuf Hakeem has filed notice of a campaign treasurer for a contest seeking to win back his District 9 seat in the election next March.

And former school administrator Tom McCullough said he is considering running for the City Council District 1 seat now held by Deborah Scott.

Dr. McCullough, who was administrator at the David Brainerd School and then principal of Signal Mountain Middle/High School, said, "I am exploring the possibility of becoming a candidate for the Chattanoga City Council for District 1."

Mr. Hakeem, who left the council in January 2006 to go on the state Board of Parole, named Gerald Mason as his treasurer.

He had said recently that he had "gotten a lot of encouragement from a broad cross-section of people."

He noted at the time, "The district has changed some, but I have served every part of the current district either while on the school board from 1981-1990 or on the City Council beginning with the new form of city government in 1990. I do feel I can be of service to the community."

He said it is his understanding that he can stay on the state board during the campaign, but he said if elected he will resign his state job.

Peter Murphy now represents District 9.
