"Digital collections are a fast and customer-friendly way to share a portion of what the Library and Archives has to offer," Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. "With this digital collection, the life of a great Tennessean is highlighted and available at any time, to anyone with Internet access.

The collection provides details about Mr. York’s heroic actions in the Argonne Forest in 1918 when he joined other American troops in taking a heavily-defended hill from the Germans. Other highlights of the collection include Mr. York's commitment to education in the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee, his tenure on the Fentress County Draft Board during World War II, and his contributions to the movie, Sergeant York, which was based on his experiences in World War I.
The online exhibit contains images from a scouting trip to Fentress County by the producers of Sergeant York, as well as scenes of rural life in the Cumberland Plateau in the mid-Twentieth Century.
As with other TeVA digital collections, the photographs, documents and clippings that make up the Alvin C. York digital collection have been drawn from a number of TSLA’s photograph and manuscript collections.
