Mayfield Isn't Getting My Vote

Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Mr. Mayfield,

As a customer of Mayfield Dairy and a resident of the Chattanooga area for the past 30 years, I've seen you on television quite a bit advertising your products.  I actually considered voting for you because I thought you might be more moderate than your opponents but my mind has been changed by your recent comments in your advertisements.

I find your ads to be misleading and disingenuous.  You say that you want to go to Washington to "stop the Obama and Pelosi liberals."  We have enough people up there "stopping" progress in Washington.  What we need is some working together of our leaders to achieve some good for the people of this country.

Secondly, you suggest in your ad that it's the "Washington liberals" who are responsible for our deficit spending and national debt.  I recall that George W. Bush and his Republican Congress never met a dollar they didn't like to spend.  In fact, the national debt has increased the most under Republican leadership.  I realize that President Obama's budget spent significant money for the stated purpose of trying to get the economy going again and this spending has contributed significantly to the national debt but your suggestion that it's the "liberals" who have spent all the money is completely inaccurate, misleading, and you are wrong to say it.  Both parties have spent money and both parties have contributed toward the national debt.

Your refusal to debate your opponents so that we can learn more about your ideas, values, and direction you want take this country combined with your refusal to patently condemn your son's tire-slashing behaviors toward your rivals have convinced me that you are not the person who deserves my vote nor my patronage.

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
