Mary Ellen London Benton, 89, of Soddy Daisy, died on Friday morning, June 22, 2012. 

She was born on March 7, 1923, in Chattanooga. Mary was a member of Sequoyah Baptist Church and a former member of Soddy Daisy First Baptist Church. She held the position as Departmental Chapter of the Gold Star Mothers for the Southeast as well as the local Chattanooga Chapter. She graduated from Soddy Daisy High School in 1941 and retired from Gold Bond after more than 28 years of service. 

There are 77 family members, because Mary and Ross fell in love. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ross Benton Sr., son, James A. Benton, parents, Roy and Frances London, siblings, Ruby, James, William “Dub” London, grandchild, Tonya Varner, great-grandson, John Michael Davis.

She is survived by her sons, John (Vickie) Benton, Roy D. (Debbie) Benton, daughters, Beverly (Randall) Lewis, Fran (Jerry) Jenkins, 17 grandchildren, 35, great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and her best friend, her dog, Dr. Watson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 25, in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend David Stancil officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. 

Family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, and 2-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, at the funeral home.
