Country Club Remains Unbeaten With Big Win Over Cumberland

Wavemakers Have Six 19-Point Scorers In 453-225 Victory

Friday, June 15, 2012 - by John Hunt

The Country Club Wavemakers at one time were one of the biggest and strongest teams in the Chattanooga Area Swim League.

But times got tough as youngsters found many other things to occupy their leisure time in the summer and the numbers started to drop.

About five years ago, Stan Corcoran took over as their head coach.  Now Stan knows a little about swimming as he's gotten great results at McCallie.  He's starting to get some pretty good results in Riverview.

The Wavemakers remained unbeaten after three meets with a home meet on Thursday when they soundly defeated the Cumberland Currents.

Numbers are always critical in meets like this and when teams are unable to put swimmers in every event and each age group, the results show.

Suffice it to say that Country Club had many more members present on Thursday than their opponents and the result was a 453-225 victory for the Wavemakers.

The winners had a 69-34 lead after the opening freestyle events and it never got any closer.

Coach Corcoran knows what it's like to have empty spots in a lineup, but he's also enjoying the benefits of having a full team for a dual meet.

"It was another good meet for us, but the key is being able to fill out our lineup," Corcoran said later.

"When I first took over as their head coach five years ago, we lost a lot of meets because we didn't have kids to participate.  It's impossible to score when kids aren't swimming, but having plenty of kids is a key to doing really well in this league.

"We won a big meet last week against Ridgeside, but it's so nice to see our kids getting better.  We have a lot more kids on the team and it's not just the little ones.  Will Turner and his sister CeCe have joined our team for the first time and they haven't lost a race.

"But the kids have really stepped up.  I feel like Calhoun and Ridgeside are the top two teams in our division, but we were lucky in that we sort of sneaked up on them last week," Corcoran added.

Lack of numbers were certainly a factor for Cumberland.

Julie Thornburg is one of three coaches for the Currents who is looking at the bigger picture.

"We didn't have a lot of kids there tonight, but the ones who were there were awesome.  They swam their hearts out and had a good time.  That's what we're looking for.

"We didn't come close to winning the meet, but that's okay.  All of our little ones had a blast and I'm sure they'll be ready for practice Friday morning.  We have a ton of new kids and we just want them to do their best.  If they do, the results will take care of themselves," Thornburg added.

The Wavemakers had six swimmers who scored the maximum 19 points, including Sophie Workinger, CeCe Turner, Elliott Brakebill, Joshia Gable, McCay Mathis and Alec Chennault.

Margaret Ann Hudson, Emelia Richey, Will Turner and Maggie Crump were next with 17 points apiece.

Jordon Schone was tops for Cumberland with 16 points.  Hunter Knox was next with 15.

The Wavemakers will face another big test on Monday when they hit I-75 for the ever-important trip to Calhoun.  Cumberland will be at home to host Big Ridge.

STUART HEIGHTS got its first win on Thursday against arch-rival Signal Mountain, 419-335.  It was the first loss for the Green Giants after three straight wins.

Other scores had Dalton defeating Ringgold, 496-262; and Calhoun over Ridgeside, 378-342. The Ooltewah Tidalwaves improved to 2-0 with a 466-221 victory over Fort Oglethorpe while the Mosby Park Waterdogs won the closest meet of the day with a 384-377 victory over the Red Bank Gators.

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
