Some County Commission Members Want To Set Their Own Pay

  • Friday, November 23, 2012

Some County Commission members want to go back to a system where the commissioners were able to set their own pay.

Commission Chairman Larry Henry confirmed that a letter to that effect has been prepared for submission to the local legislative delegation  - if enough signatures are secured.

He said about four or five commissioners have signed it.

Chairman Henry said, "I haven't signed it and I don't see it getting any wind."

The commission at one time was able to adjust its salary.

Then it went on the current system where the pay of the commissioners and those members of the City Council is tied to that of the county mayor. The county mayor (and the mayor of Chattanooga) gets a raise equivalent to pay increases of county employees.

The commission will meet with the local legislative delagation at the Chattanooga Choo Choo on Dec. 13.
