Bill Dance App for Your Smartphone

The "free" App isn't really free

Bill Dance has joined the App Craze!

These days if you're a business and you don't have an App for iPhones or Droids, you're the dullest knife on the cutting edge.

Not be left behind, one of America's most well known fishermen now has his own App. The news release says this "free iPhone and iPad application is full of fishing tips that’s made him successful over his four decades of pro BASS tournament fishing and in the filming of his popular weekly national TV show Bill Dance Outdoors."

I was intrigued by the word "free" because virtually every of "outdoor oriented" App I've seen to date cost money. So, of course, I immediately downloaded Bill's App.

What I quickly discovered was that it's not really free.

There are a few free things scattered here and yon, but the majority of the premium content costs money... mostly .99 cents for each "video fishing tip."

Old Bill (or his business buddies) have simply created a different business model. So yea, the App is "free," but it's simply a lure to get you to bite on the paid content.

Dance said. ”The app is a variety of educational type tips. We’re constantly updating, with the latest in the fishing industry and links to manufacturers we work with so owners of the app can stay up with the newest products in the marketplace.”

If you turn on Push notification for the App, everytime there is such an update, out of the blue you hear Bill Dance himself make an announcement from your phone. The first time I heard Bill Dance in my pocket, it was sort of disconcerting.

“We have some really unique tips that you don’t see every day,” Dance said vis the news release. "Things that can really catch fish you wouldn’t normally think to do or to use, such as the importance of dissolved oxygen, what fish do in low oxygen situations. Can they be caught in those situations? Yes! Can bass be caught in a 40 degree muddy environment in the dead of winter? Yes, and we show you how. It covers some of the most unique patterns and lure opportunity presentations anglers have ever seen or faced. It also covers the basics, things a father or mother can do with their son or daughter and shows you more in-depth stuff that you can graduate up to.... this free app will be constantly evolving with new things being added.”

I have no doubt all of that is true... but don't be deceived. It's not really "free."
