William Hays Pogue, 87, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, died on Saturday, August 28, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther W. and Mollie M. Pogue, son, Franklin Stone Pogue, daughter, Julie Pogue Feagans, bother, Warren Pogue and sister, Mildred Pogue.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Hays was born and raised in Chattanooga. He was in the class of 1941 at City High and the class of 1950 at the University of Chattanooga where he was a member of Sigma Tau Delta, a national honorary English fraternity.

He was in the U.S. Navy during WWII serving in the Naval Intelligence at Midway Island, Wahiawa and Imperial Beach.

Hays was an agency officer with Interstate/Gulf Life Insurance Company for 41 years. He was a senior instructor with the Life Underwriters Council and a member of the National Board in Washington D.C. He was past president of the General Agents and Managers Association.

He was also on the board of the Chattanooga Half Century Club, a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Club and the International Duke Ellington Society.

He was active in sports as a player and a coach and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Stone Pogue, son, Richard Hays Pogue, of Bradenton, Fl., daughter, Nancy Pogue Tyler, son-in-law, Mark Feagans, both of Chattanooga, grandchildren, Jessica Porrata, Tyler Hays Pogue, Joshua and Rachel Tyler, Blake and Jack Feagans, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, at Grace Episcopal Church with Reverend Susan Butler officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5–8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, at the funeral home.
